Re: The Barrens...Moyer v The Jersey Devil
Okay, here it goes....
We watched The Barrens last night and I have to say it was a good movie. Stephen did an admirable job, as well as the actors that played his family.
The problem with the film is the story. The story is a good one, asking the question: Is there a Jersey Devil or is this a figment of Richard Vineyard's imagination? You go through the film asking the question. Richard is sick and his family...well let's just say it is not in great shape either.
We discover that Richard used to come here with his dad when he was younger and he believes he saw the Jersey Devil back then when he was a child. When people begin to show up dead in the film, you wonder who or what is killing them.
The story is a little too vague on many points. There are not enough flashbacks and you get the feeling you jumped into the story in the middle of things, and you have. It suffers from a lack of direction and not enough time knowing the family to really get them and feel empathy toward them and really care about what happens to them.
But the good thing about the movie is the acting. Stephen hands in really good performance and you get a sense of his range in this film. The special effects are not as good on some things as they are on others. You do get to see the Jersey Devil, and it is a good effect, but you don't get a sense of its reality until the end.
If you are looking for a an especially well crafted story, you aren't gonna get it, sad to say. But if you are looking to see a really good performance handed out by some great actors, Stephen included, you are in for a treat. Still, it was worth the money for $10.00 and a great film to enjoy.

Welcome aboard Terry.
Sounds like it gets at least two thumbs up, even with its limitations.
