J. Edgar Hoover

Okay history buffs and Clint Eastwood fans, Sean and I went to see this flick.

This movie suffers from a lack of identity. It is neither the expose the media hyped it to be, nor the study of the creation of the FBI and the building of the legend of J. Edgar Hoover. It has very little definition as a film and revolves in a permanent state of in media reas...It is always in the middle of the story. It is almost as though you are seeing the movie second and third hand. Which really disappoints me, but then, what should I expect from the man who made a film about the Hereafter when no one ever really went there and no one proved there was a "there" to begin with.

To be fair, though, Leonardo DiCaprio does an admirable job as the enigmatic Hoover without the Oliver Stone conspiracy theory. It dryly swings back and forth from the beginning of J. Edgar's career to his death. It suggests J. Edgar's sexual leanings without being obvious and even offers an explanation to the rumors he cross dressed. Professionally, we see J. Edgar a less than confident man who tended to embellish and embroider his own importance and his own deeds and his own involvement in such high profile cases as the Lindbergh Baby kidnapping and the killing of John Dillinger and down playing some of the most important and much played on facets of the development of the FBI like the use of forensics.

The brighter side of the movie was recognizing such True Blood favorites and alumni such as Denis O'Hare (Russell Edgington) and Steven Root (Eddie Fournier) who's appearance on the screen as a forensic handwriting analyst and a wood specialist respectively led to the only excited whispers in the theatre, coming from we Truebies as we recognized the two....

Save your money though and watch it on HBO or rent it from NetFlicks and drink a couple of cups of coffee before you do, it is long (2 1/2 hours) and a bit boring....Sean and I could have saved our money and napped at home for free....

Very good to know. Sounds like a great movie for a rainy saturday when all you want to do is nap anyways. Thanks for the review and the money savings too!
