This book is the sort of Vampire book men would love but women, not so much.

Set in 1840's Louisiana, it is about Joshua York, a Vampire, who makes a river boat partnership with Abner Marsh, a down on his luck river boat captain. Joshua tells us he was from France and was born the offspring of a Vampire couple. His mother died and he and father are inches from being murdered during the French Revolution.

Vampires in this book are born, not made, and they have their first thirst at puberty...as if puberty doesn't suck enough. He spends much of his early years developing a blood substitute, made primarily of sheep's blood and alcohol and other ingredients. Joshua does not drink human blood again once he has developed this blood substitute.

He endeavors to convert his Vampire brothers and sisters to this "bloodless" lifestyle but he runs up against opposition with Damon Julian, who is a backwards thinking Vampire who considers himself a Bloodmaster, sort of like a King of the Vampires.

The story follows Joshua and Abner through 11 years of hunting for this band of rogue Vampires in their river boat, the Fevre Dream. It is a densely written, sometimes plodding book.

For someone whose imagination gave us Game of Thrones, I have to say, this one is a snoozer.... Sleep
