Re: Stephen Plays a Barrister
Looks interesting. I can hear the Barrister already asking if nothing is sacred, LOL!!

Re: Stephen Plays a Barrister
Okay, so our local theatre did a special run of this film and Sean took me. First thing I want to say about this film is that it moves really slow and it is told from the point views of two characters: Colin Firth and Reese Witherspoon. Colin plays a private detective who is working with the defense. And it isn't really because he thinks they are innocent, it is that he doesn't believe in the death penalty. Reese plays the mom of one of the kids, Stevie, and how she deals with not only the loss of her son, but the media attention everyone got.
There are a lot of major problems with the movie. The main problem seems to be a lack of focus. It is difficult to tell what the film is trying to tell you. Are they trying to tell the viewer the town was clouded by their belief there was a Satanic Cabal in their town and they were all convinced the devil was among them and Damien Ecchols was his high priest? Were they trying to suggest the police department was inept and they miss ed the ball the night the three boys went missing? Were they trying to suggest there may have been a real suspect and no one bothered to look into it until it was too late? The film tries to do all three I think and as a result, the story does none of these things effectively.
For those of you who want to see the movie because Stephen Moyer is in it, you will be disappointed. Stephen appears only a few times and his scenes are very short. But none of the actors are the failing point of this film. It simply does not do what it sets out to do. You really don't understand what the film is meant to do.
If you want to see the whole story, check out HBO's three documentaries about the case. It is more informative and far more focused.
